Coding Inpatient Cardiac Surgery Procedures
Seminar Date
April 21, 2011
Faculty
John C. Alexander, Jr., MD, and Melanie Endicott, MBA/HCM, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P
Description
When coding for inpatient surgery procedures such as bypass and transplants, it’s important to understand how accurate coding and reporting affects reimbursement as well as data analysis, benchmarking and trending. As some of the most complex surgical coding in ICD-9-CM Volume 3, inpatient surgical coding is defined by specific anatomical and procedural indicators. In this audio seminar, we’ll discuss anatomy that is identified with the heart and great vessels when performing major cardiac surgery procedures. In addition, we will define major cardiac surgery procedures performed in the inpatient setting such as aortocoronary bypass, internal mammary bypass, and heart transplants. Correct coding of these procedures including specific, official coding guidelines will be defined, and finally we’ll identify terms and definitions used in ICD-10-PCS that map to coding in ICD-9-CM. Case scenarios will be used for coding practice.
